First off, I'd like to point out that the only reason why I'm writing this is for my watchers and the people who truly enjoy my work. It's not for attention and it's definitely not to try and gain popularity. So here we go...
As of today, I'm not going to be posting on this website anymore. I won't be updating my galleries and I won't be responding to any notes or messages. There are three links to where you can still see my recent work. I'm not taking my profile/gallery down, I'm just not going to be using it anymore.
DeviantArt has turned into a joke. I signed up on this site almost 7 years ago, and back then I thought it was a really great place. There were a lot of talented artists I looked up to and things were generally pretty good. There are still a lot of great artists on here, they just go unnoticed. I have seen some gorgeous pieces with only ten or fifteen favorites and maybe one comment. These pieces are buried in the back pages, hiding behind all of the amateur porn and line drawings of fat anime characters. I'm tired of seeing naked women with their legs open sprawled all across the front page. I'm tired of seeing furry art everywhere I turn. I'm tired of seeing animated bouncing emoticons get daily deviations while beautiful painted portraits and landscapes receive no attention.
This is not an art community. This is not a place where people can connect with other artists and learn and grow and gain new perspective. This is a popularity contest. I anticipate some will think "Well you have to be active in the forums to get noticed." Why? I didn't join this site because I wanted to spend time writing messages in a form. I joined because I wanted a place to display my art and maybe have it be appreciated. But the only way you get appreciated and noticed here is by being exactly like everyone else and copying ideas from someone else whose work you saw in the "what's hot" section. Talent and hard work are not big themes around here. Mediocrity and popularity, however, seem to dominate the overall ideals of this place. And lets not get started on all of the creepy weirdos who have messaged me in the last 7 years....
The straw that broke the camels back, so to speak, happened the other day. I was browsing through the stock and resources section when I came upon some images that were in no way suitable for the site. They were by a new user who decided that DeviantArt was also a porn site (and with all of the "artistic nudes" around here, I guess I can't blame him for this assumption). He was uploading images that were clearly pornographic and had apparently been reported by multiple users. Nothing was done about it. I pay for a premium membership, and I don't appreciate being subjected to that kind of content.
Thank you to all of the people who have favorited and commented my work, I truly appreciate it. Maybe I'll come back someday if things get cleaned up around here and REAL art starts getting the attention it deserves.
